Okay the whole series is SO underrated like maybe this is just the autism talking but it’s so much more than a kids’ series, I love it just as much now as I did in second grade. The Netflix series has brought it some popularity, and admittedly it’s really good, but everyone should read the books too! Oh, and the All the Wrong Questions series deserves more recognition as well because it’s also very good.

Actually a really original series, people say it’s another Madoka clone but it has so many cool new ideas to offer to the Magical Girl genre. In addition, I found the later light novels to be even better than the anime; Limited was my favorite, it was so fun to watch three groups with completely different objectives trapped together to make sense of a dangerous situation.

Some of my other favorite things about the series are the unpredictability (with the switching POV you can never really tell who’s going to bite it) the creative use of powers, the amazing character design, and the fact that a lot of the characters are veteran magical girls, so we don’t just have to watch a bunch of newbies learning the ropes every arc.

Overall I was more than a little disappointed with the game; the treatment of the female characters was poor, the pacing was all over the place, and Morgana was incredibly obnoxious. I still liked it, but I definitely don’t think that it was the best in the SMT series. They did do a really good job with the dungeons though.

I don’t honestly care if she’s not technically a princess, Mulan is the best Disney princess (and the best Disney movie) and she wipes the fucking floor with the likes of Aurora and Belle. I don’t think it’s a particularly unpopular opinion that Mulan is awesome, but I also don’t think she gets the recognition she deserves!

Aside from the songs from the movie (which are awesome) I’ll go with Cage On The Ground by Flyleaf.

And in this case I actually will take the opportunity to gush about Mulan in a manner that can’t necessarily be construed as “unpopular;” my favorite part about Mulan as a character is that she ultimately has the best character arc of any of the Disney princesses.

The ideal character arc that we can probably all agree upon is to start with a protagonist who is likable but notably flawed, watch them grow as a person, and ultimately overcome their struggles while staying true to themselves. That’s the whole point of Disney movies, yeah? And yet among the princesses we have:

  1. Aurora (does no work whatsoever, could literally be replaced with a lamp and nothing would change)
  2. Belle (has zero flaws, yet supposedly struggles with being a social outcast)
  3. Snow White, Cinderella (don’t have notable character arcs)
  4. Pocahontas, Jasmine (character arcs are solely defined by their respective love interests)
  5. Ariel (doesn’t actually learn anything throughout the course of the movie)

Then there’s Merida, Rapunzel, Tiana, and Elsa, who I actually do like, but have slightly smaller problems with that still makes them not stand out as much as Mulan. Mulan is an incredibly sympathetic protagonist, she’s introduced as being quirky in a way that makes her life difficult, but ultimately uses those quirks to overcome her struggles and insecurities. Plus, despite having a love interest, his role in the movie is purely platonic until the end, he never steals the spotlight, and Mulan’s romantic interest in him doesn’t sidetrack her or influence her actions or decisions.

My favorite scene in the movie is definitely the pole-climbing montage, it’s amazing to see a character who works so, so hard for her goals instead of sliding by on some innate talent or help from a love interest. Not to mention the iconic song.
