the thing that american (& usually white) leftists don’t seem to understand about communism is that it’s like the only form of government that originally existed in theoretical form and therefore people assume they can’t criticize how it’s materially affected millions of people. like, there’s no “capitalist manifesto,” it’s a form of government that evolved over time, so we judge it based on the impact that it has on people. but then we don’t judge communism the same way, because there’s a book about it that we can cite to show that yes, it could still work, it’s not malicious “in theory.” but that’s super disrespectful of all the families who have been torn apart and all the lives that have been ruined by people like mao and stalin. unfortunately, in the real world, concept doesn’t really matter. consequences matter.
