Comparing FMA 2003 to Brotherhood and arguing over which is better is ultimately futile because both are extremely flawed compared to the original manga. At least 2003 embraced its differences from the manga and tried to do its own thing with the story, while Brotherhood constantly attempts to portray itself as “the real Fullmetal Alchemist” despite practically spitting in Arakawa’s face at every turn. If you think that Hiromu “I hate fanservice” Arakawa would approve of Brotherhood’s constant sexualization of Winry and other teenage girls in the series, you’ve clearly got your head up your ass. Yes, 2003 was very flawed. It had atrocious pacing and a weird ending, but it did what it could with what it had. Brotherhood on the other hand has no excuse for its misogyny and huge focus shift on romance and drama over comedy (which arakawa considered a very important part of the series) and familial love (it’s literally called “Brotherhood” and yet a ton of scenes between Ed and Al were cut in favor of EdWin. okay) and therefore has just as many flaws (I would argue more) as 2003. Instead of preaching about how Brotherhood is the best anime of our times or whatever, just take the time to read the manga. Support one of the most successful female mangakas in the world instead of supporting the mediocre show that she had no hand in writing.
