im feeling very sad for feminism today… i think where we went wrong was trying to commodify and commercialize feminism with these “girl power” and “the future is female” t shirts which were created by this minimalistic pastel aesthetic and kind of softened what previously was a very anarchist and rebellious movement (see early 90s feminist rock bands which glamorized the opposite of femininity with shaved hair, unshaved pits and legs, no makeup)
and now we have artists like ariana grande, nicki minaj, fifth harmony, daya, etc (this isn’t a callout post for them i don’t care about them as individuals i’m just commenting on a trend in pop culture perpetrated by the music industry) who put out music with feminist sentiments but absolutely no evidence of actively rebelling against societal expectations for women. “i don’t need boys i don’t need to be pretty i don’t need to be sexy” performed in scantily clad clothing with makeup sponsored by perfume and makeup companies is proof that capitalistic pressure has kind of destroyed the rebellious nature of the feminist movement.
so now we have a generation of girls raised on the internet convinced that performing femininity and caking their natural face in makeup in order to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty, placing their worth in their physical appearance inherently by paying money in order to appease some made up standard of what is acceptable for women, and they’ve convinced themselves that this, this conformity of expectation of feminist for women, is inherently feminist?
like it sucks like you guys know feminism is a counteractive movement right? like you know to be feminist is to rebel right? it’s not enough to consume pretty, neat, but wholly hypocritical ideals of feminism. it’s lazy. we have a generation of girls who want to adhere to expectations for women, who want to become that ideal that men have constructed, but now because they “reclaimed” it, that’s feminist?
like no sorry you Can do those things you Can put on makeup and shave and look pretty and girl you Can but don’t pretend that’s feminist it’s literally not. you’re not helping feminism the commodification of feminism is not helpful. men are not upset by you saying “the future is female” when you still look pretty and pink and non-threatening. we aren’t liberated by expectation just because you are now accepting of it. feminism is not complacency.
this post doesn’t apply to the reclaimation of femininity in the context of trans women which is a whole other discussion but generally i think the idea still applies. thanks
and like you know what else sucks? the fact that women are going to reply to this saying “SOMEONE doesn’t know how to apply makeup” as if that’s some burn like no i never felt compelled to because makeup clogs your pores which makes you break out which makes it easier for the makeup industry to sell you shit for your skin which wouldn’t be happening if you didn’t put that shit on your face. acne is natural, washing your face is natural, but clogging ur pores that much is not. it’s an industrial decision.
also like women today who love makeup And feminism mocking gnc women sound exactly like men in the 70s who protested feminism on the basis that it makes women “man hating lesbians” so congrats?
die mad about it but makeup and shaving isn’t feminist even if it’s a “personal choice/preference”. it was socially ingrained in you from birth to perform this way so the easiest choice is to accept it but it isn’t feminist.
not to #resist fun but an app like snapchat which digitally “enhances” the photos you take of yourself inevitably leads to greater dissatisfaction w your actual face in the same way that photoshopped images in media increase body dissatisfaction, but actually worse than that bc it’s an unrealistically enhanced version of you and therefore harder to dismiss or ignore
A lot of plastic surgeons are saying that more and more people are walking in with Snapchat filter photos of themselves as reference to how they want to look. We really need to be aware of how much harm these filters do to our self image.
the problem with “ehehe well IM a writer and i NEVER put symbolism in my books teachers are just REALLY stupid” is that just cause you wrote sheith coffee au you somehow think that puts you on equal footing with literally any other Great American Author and gives your voice any merit.
i wish some people would realise that *destroying the nuclear family* means the liberation of woman as a class, the destruction of heterosexuality as the material base for the categories of gender, communal parenting, decentering romantic relationships as the only space for happiness, freedom, and spontaneity, etc… and not like……. being part of a fucking polycule and pressuring people who want to be monogamous into having sex they’re not comfortable with
the whole “this is good for kids” thing doesn’t….really make sense. like if they wanted to protect minors then 1. making sure there was no CP on the site and 2. enforcing the explicit blog function correctly would be the top priority. The sex workers i know/have seen on this site make use of the explict blog function and repeatedly block/warn people under 18/21 not to interact with them or they’ll get blocked. the wording of the new rules is very obviously targeting sex workers and tumblr’s transphobic definition of women. This is just a heavy handed two sided slap to get back on the app store and hurt the sex workers that rely on this site even more. also i’m pretty sure removing nazi’s would fall under “protecting children” but…here we are!
I think we can acknowledge how this move will hurt sex workers while also liking the taking down of material that’s harmful for kids? It’s too dismissive to just say “horny people have no rights” as sex workers will and have been hurt by tumblrs clumsy ass implementation but also it was wild that 15 year olds were sharing posts in how to report child porn.
The real solution was to have better tagging, a nsfw system that actually worked and for them to aggressively tackle cases of child porn, pedophilies and their communities which could have been done with months woth of site infrastructure revamping. Instead they had a few weeks to do something to get back in the App Store. We can acknowledge the people who were screwed over and endangered. It’s important to protecting sexworkers. There are many blogs in here that don’t care about sex workers and don’t care they their livelihood was or in jeopardy and just care that they can look at hentai anymore.
Y’all shouldn’t be rallying with those people and everyone needs to be better allies and uplift the voices of sex workers and I think we can do both(listen to sex workers and not let their legitimate concerns be co-opted by people who only care about looking at Sheith porn)
before you geeks bring out the inevitable “horny people have no rights xd” jokes again id like to remind you that there are sex workers on this site that either partly or fully rely on this site for income and theres literally nothing about this thats good or helpful
like fucking clockwork
“find other sites to be horny on” is pretty rich when sex workers were specifically targeted by congress and law enforcement under the guise of helping them (in SESTA), and in the seven months since they have been banned from almost all the sites that they provided services and content on.
SESTA and its consequences demonstrate the reassertion of (straight, white, cis, anti-lgbt) Puritan mores and sexual principles to our society, and if you’re cheering that on you need to stop and think for a while about what it is you want (and yes this is specifically do with SESTA, it’s not hard to suss out the through-line between SESTA, Apple deleting Tumblr from the app store per new regulations, and Tumblr deciding to kill adult content.
i don’t mean to sound fake deep but the reason 2018 felt so long was because we’re being fed what’s trending at such a rapid rate that we literally can’t remember half of the shit that even happened anymore. “Black Panther came out in February!” Marvel releases so many movies a year that we completely forget about the last movie as soon as a new one comes out and it repeats in a vicious cycle. “Tide Pods/Ugandan Knuckles was in January!” The life span of memes have been rapidly declining for years and it’s gotten to the point where the average lifespan of a meme is about 2 weeks and then the next thing gets popular and then that lasts for 2 weeks and it just keeps going. We’re literally losing our sense of time because of our rapid consumption of media and pop culture.
