assuming being gay is inherently about sexual deviance or hypersexuality is homophobic. what is wrong with this fucking website passing the idea that anyone discussing being gay must clarify whether or not sex is involved is progressive. weve really looped right back around to baseline homophobia

mark saltzman said he wrote these two childrens character as in love and gay. everyone (including sesame street) wants to focus on that relationship as being overtly sexual and inappropriate for children, because that is classic homophobia. how is the response “this is dismissive of people who dont have sex” instead of “this is a homophobic line weve been fed for ages because homophobes dont believe we can really feel love for one another, just lust”

beachdeath:

i don’t know what’s worse: the producers of sesame street actually taking the time to rebuke an openly gay former writer’s gentle and moving admission that he’d based several bert and ernie sketches on his relationship with his late partner OR this person waltzing into the middle of a discussion about homophobia to make a completely fucking irrelevant comment accusing sesame street of hating asexuals

I’m about to get real salty so just bear with me for a sec.

Basically, if you think that Bubbline needed any other show’s support to be canon, y’all are damn fools. The storyboarders have been pushing for this since before Steven Universe and Legend of Korra even aired, and just because bubbline wasn’t originally intended to be endgame doesn’t mean that they only decided to do it because other shows had proved it was acceptable. Even if bubbline became canon after Korrasami/Rupphire/whatever, we all know it’s been in the works for years and the writers didn’t need anyone’s help or approval.

Also I hate to be that guy, but Korrasami really isn’t the “iconic LGBT rep” that you all act like it is. It was 90% word of god and outside confirmation in the comics, because even if the creators cared about LGBT representation, they still didn’t care enough to write the final scene in a way that couldn’t still be interpreted as platonic by homophobes. Sorry if that’s harsh, but it’s true.

Steven Universe was definitely better, but let’s not forget that it’s creator, Rebecca Sugar, got her start on Adventure Time, writing some of the best episodes of the earlier seasons. Specifically, she storyboarded “What Was Missing,” the episode that opened a community-wide discussion regarding LGBT characters in children’s media. Steven Universe would never have been able to accomplish the things it did if it weren’t for Adventure Time. And by the way, I’m not just talking about Bubbline: Adventure Time has been pushing the boundaries of gender and sexuality in all kinds of ways since it first started airing. BMO has been referred to with both male and female pronouns, and has shown attraction to both genders as well. Jake wears makeup and is pretty obviously coded as bi in my opinion. The gladiators in “Morituri Te Salutamus” were all in gay relationships. Not to mention that most of the kingdoms in Ooo operate under matriarchies, and titles such as “princess” and “king” aren’t even gendered half the time. Was any of this on the same level as having a canon F/F couple within the main cast? No, of course not, but it was something, and it opened up a path for a ton of other cartoons to introduce LGBT characters.

I’m just tired of seeing posts that say shit like “Korrasami walked so that Bubbline could run.” Uh… no. Bubbline ran all on its own, and Korrasami walked awkwardly beside it. Steven Universe ran too, but with shittier writing.
